Career Counselling Session by UpGrad

Career Counselling Session by UpGrad

The session included a comprehensive analysis of seven case studies, which led us to understand that careers no longer exist in silos, they interconnect constantly and evolve into new domains.

Teaching and learning in classrooms should involve interconnectedness of all subjects with a broader perspective and compell students to think about Economics with environmental studies and Psychology, Computer Science with Philosophy, and History with Politics, and Business studies. This multidimensional approach would help them to be better prepared with skills which are essential for career success. This intriguing session built towards drawing the following conclusions.

  • Disciplines by themselves don’t lead to jobs but skills and qualities like ethics, empathy, and global awareness knowledge do.
  • Single disciplines don’t lead to singular careers, single or multiple disciplines lead to multiple career options.
  • Career growth is not a vertical ladder, lateral growth is equally important.
  • Techies without human skills can find jobs but may not discover successful careers. Students cannot limit themselves to studying, humanities, tech, sciences, or commerce.
  • One problem does not have one solution. It demands multiple perspectives for unconstrained solutions.
  • Students require much more than academic knowledge.  They must understand International Relations & Politics, Community Psychology, Ethical Debate, Digital / Non-Verbal Communication, Critical Analysis, Understanding of Impact, and Empathy.

While the scope of interdisciplinary studies may be limited for students at the school level, they should be encouraged to undertake projects and internships that allow them to explore their varied interests, which will prepare them for the future.
